The Big Island’s remote location in the North Pacific Ocean is often talked about. What is it like to visit the most isolated archipelago in the world, let alone live in it?
First, Hawaii’s secluded spot on the globe is a huge part of its appeal. It feels worlds away from the worries of the rest of the planet, rendering it the perfect spot to unwind, relax, and recharge. Next, it’s just as modern as many places throughout the nation and offers its visitors and residents a wide range of impeccable services. Let’s examine.
As a leading global destination, the Big Island of Hawaii has nearly every sort of accommodation available — and even those you may not have ever pondered. From opulent, five-star resorts to charming bed and breakfasts, the island satisfies everyone’s personality, lifestyle, and preferences. Here’s a rundown of a few of its most venerated spots.
Situated on the legendary, breathtakingly-beautiful Kohala Coast, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai is what dreams are made of. Staggering vistas of the vast Pacific Ocean spool out in several directions. Rooms, suites, and its new slew of villas are spacious, luxurious, and outfitted with high-end details. Restaurants on-site allow you to leisurely walk from the pool, beach, or your suite into an upscale setting that serves hyper-fresh seafood and dishes made with locally-grown seasonal ingredients. Its pools redefine indulgence; its spa levels up the whole resort experience.
As a playground for celebrities, this lush, private resort is just as appealing to youngsters, thanks to its spate of marine life and touch tank, aptly named “King’s Pond.”
While the Kohala Coast presents posh resorts and pristine, multi-million dollar properties, Holualoa Inn (and Holualoa proper) offers its lucky guests a completely different taste of Hawaii.
Situated on 30 verdant, impeccable acres on the slopes of Mount Hualalai, this award-winning bed and breakfast is located 1,400 feet above sea level and presents sweeping, phenomenal views of the ocean, countryside, and volcano. It is mere minutes away from several of the Big Island’s greatest attractions, including swimming with manta rays and stargazing at the peak of Mauna Kea. The luxe B&B doesn’t serve any ordinary breakfast, either. Fresh, tropical fruit, like mango, papaya, and pineapple, are at the heart of these morning meals, which are offered alongside steaming-hot mugs of 100% Kona coffee.
People from around the globe flock to the Big Island in droves to witness the spectacular splendor of an island in the making. Hawaii is home to five massive and mysterious volcanoes, and three of them are active.
The sight of the fiery lava flow that’s increasing Hawaii’s size is amazing to see in person, and the Volcano House provides an up close and personal experience. The historical inn features 33 guest rooms, 16 campsites, and 10 cabins within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and offers awe-inspiring views of Halemaumau Crater and its exquisite flora and fauna. The Volcano House also boasts a wonderful restaurant called The Rim, where you can dine on island-inspired fares like sashimi, lobster crab cakes with charred macadamia nut romesco, and seared Kona kampachi with ginger-mirin butter.
If a bit of relaxation is on your radar, don’t miss Kona Monarch Massage, a traveling therapy service that promises a resort-style experience and tranquility. With couples’ and group massages, reflexology, deep tissue and sports therapy massages, aromatherapy, Lomi Lomi, and more, you are sure to feel refreshed and revitalized for even more adventure on the Big Island.
Hawaii Sanctuary by Saima Day Spa is another oasis of serenity. With the famed couples’ massage loft and a variety of services, from fire and ice facials to acupuncture and hydro dermabrasion brightening techniques, you will feel and look your very best.
To freshen up your look, head to Salon MUSE. With services like vivid color treatments, toning and color corrections, Olaplex, braiding, curling, and balayage, you’ll leave with an impressive style that will turn heads.
The Foodland Farms Mauna Lani is the perfect spot for fresh groceries, bakery items, deli meats, seafood, and exquisite wines. KTA Super Stores is another popular place for a shopping adventure, where you’ll find an assortment of fresh seasonal fruits, salads, Hawaii Island grass-fed beef products, coffee, fresh fish, personal care items, and more. From albacore to fresh mango to local desserts like sweet potato manju, baked manapua, and bread pudding, you are sure to find a range of fantastic foods.

The Big Island spans 4,028 square miles, and parts of the island can only be seen in a 4x4 or by foot or boat. While you don’t necessarily need a Hummer to explore the island from Kona to Hilo or from Hualalai to Kilauea, it is recommended to rent a car. Fortunately, there are plenty of rental car companies on the island; each has a selection of vehicles to suit your travel needs. For those who want nothing more than to bask in the sun at their luxury resort, please note that many hotels on the Kohala Coast offer complimentary rides to and from Kona International Airport.
